Samsung lists its GDDR7 memory chips for next-gen GPUs

Eight months ago, Samsung revealed that it had completed the development of GDDR7 memory chips. Earlier this month, JEDEC published the final specifications of GDDR7 memory, allowing memory brands to finally launch their next-generation memory chips. Now, Samsung has listed its GDDR7 chips on its website (via @harukaze5719).

Samsung has added two GDDR7 memory chips to its product catalog: K4VAF325ZC-SC28 and K4VAF325ZC-SC32. Both are 16Gbit chips, but the former has a data transfer rate of up to 28GT/s, while the latter has a data transfer rate of up to 32GT/s. Both GDDR7 chips have a 512M x32 layout and a 266-pin FBGA packaging. Samsung has already started sampling these chips and may appear in final products in a few weeks or months.

JEDEC’s highest configuration for GDDR7 chips is 64Gbit (8GB) capacity and a transfer rate of 48GT/s. However, Samsung’s first set of GDDR7 memory has more moderate specifications, as mentioned above. In terms of performance, these memory chips should offer a significant boost to next-generation GPUs compared to the ones using existing GDDR6 and GDDR6X memory chips.

These memory chips are expected to be used by AMD in its RX 8000 series GPUs and Nvidia in its RTX 5000 series GPUs. AMD is expected to launch those GPUs in the second half of this year, while Nvidia could launch its rival GPUs in late 2024 or early 2025. It will be a tough competition between Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron to supply GDDR7 memory to GPU makers, AI chip makers, and network equipment makers.
